PETERBOROUGH, NH – September 9, 2005 – SoftLanding Systems today announces the open source release of RSE Extensions, a WDSC 6.0-compatible plug-in that includes spooled file output, System i messages, and editing perspective utilities.
The Developers can freely access the plug-in’s binaries as well as the source code from the SoftLanding Website. “IBM has encouraged and supported our development of plug-ins for years. We're pleased to follow their lead in supporting the open source community by contributing RSE Extensions under the Common Public License Version 1.0,” says Steve Gapp President and CEO of SoftLanding Systems. "We invite all users of WDSC to not only install the RSE Extensions Plug-in, but to participate with us and IBM in extending its functionality."
The RSE Extensions Plug-in offers convenient features that enhance a developer’s WDSC work environment and make it easier to work entirely within the WebSphere IDE. In one download, the plug-in provides direct access to spooled file output from within WDSC, the ability to monitor iSeries message queues, and a pre-arranged collection of views that makes it easier to view two source-editing windows simultaneously.
"SoftLanding has integrated their offerings with WebSphere Development Studio Client since the first release. It is great to see them taking the initiative to create an open source project for extensions to the RSE,” says Don Yantzi, Technical Release Lead, WebSphere Development Studio & WebSphere Development Studio Client for iSeries. “These RSE extensions further enhance the value of WDSC to iSeries developers, and I hope to see the WDSC community both using these extensions and contributing back to the open source project," he remarked.
RSE Extensions is SoftLanding’s second major contribution to the open source community this year. The open source version control tool Subversion for OS/400, developed by SoftLanding and released in April, is the foundation for TurnOverSVN, TurnOver’s integrated, PC source version control solution.
In March 2003, SoftLanding introduced TurnOver for WebSphere Studio, the first set of software configuration management plug-ins to support development and deployment of both native iSeries and Web applications under a single process. Companies that need to manage Java, PC, and Web development in conjunction with traditional iSeries development, and those who are facing compliance audits, benefit from TurnOver’s unified software management process. Its single iSeries audit database consolidates all information regarding software changes to applications, regardless of platform, into one place.
"Our goal is to provide the most up-to-date tools to help iSeries-centric shops implement unified software management practices throughout their IT organizations,” says Gapp. “We see our free plug-ins and open source initiatives as continued steps to enhance the extensibility of the WDSC development platform for iSeries."
